How to Stock a Home Bar Without Buying Forty Bottles

A compact bottle list, a short tool list and a shopping order that puts the drinks you make ahead of the bar you imagine owning.

Start with your actual drinking habits

A useful home bar is not a miniature liquor store. Write down the three drinks you make most often and the two drinks your regular guests request. Buy for that list first.

If everyone drinks highballs, you do not need six amaros. If your house drink is an Old Fashioned, one dependable whiskey matters more than a decorative back bar.

The flexible eight-bottle bar

  • Bourbon or rye for Old Fashioneds, Gold Rushes and whiskey highballs
  • London dry gin for Martinis, Negronis and tonic
  • Blanco tequila for Ranch Water, Margaritas and Palomas
  • A versatile white rum for Daiquiris and simple long drinks
  • Sweet vermouth, refrigerated after opening
  • Dry vermouth, also refrigerated after opening
  • An Italian bitter aperitif
  • Orange liqueur for citrus drinks

Add the small things that do the work

Keep aromatic bitters, fresh citrus, sugar or honey, sparkling water and plenty of ice. These inexpensive supporting ingredients create more range than another bottle chosen at random.

Tools: keep it short

  • A two-sided jigger or small measuring cup
  • A shaker
  • A mixing glass or sturdy pint glass
  • A long spoon
  • A strainer
  • A sharp paring knife and a citrus press

Glassware: four shapes are enough

Rocks glasses, tall glasses, small wine glasses and a stemmed cocktail glass cover nearly everything. Matching sets are pleasant, not mandatory. Clean glassware at the right size matters more than a cabinet full of specialty shapes.

Buy in this order

First buy for one spirit-forward drink, one citrus drink and one tall sparkling drink. Make those well for a month. Add a bottle only when a recipe you genuinely want requires it.

Store spirits away from heat and direct light. Refrigerate opened vermouth and replace it when its flavor becomes flat or oxidized. Keep a zero-proof option ready with the same care you give the rest of the bar.
